In the far future of a much more traveled and commercially exploited universe, survivabiltiy scores are given to potential space workers for insurance purposes. Pets receive grading as well – some creatures are simply not suited to the dangers of space. Your galactic pirates, your black holes, your alien incursions, all the usual work hazards.
Orange cats are famed for their high survivabiltiy scores. Brown tabbies, not so much. But one intrepid technician and her faithful feline companion set out to beat those odds (or at least bribe their way past them).
